Reception / Year 1 - Chestnut Class

Class teacher Miss Juliana Mandra

Class overview

Welcome to Chestnut class.

We are a mixed EYFS/Y1 class who learn in room 2.

There are 12 Reception and 8 Y1 children in our class and our teacher is Miss Mandra supported by HLTA Mrs Ling.

On Fridays, when Miss Mandra is released from class for PPA and management duties, Mrs Ling is our teacher.

Other adults who help us in our class at different times during the week are: Mrs Wilson, Mrs Moore and Mrs Gray-Smith.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is a combination of the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Year 1 curriculum. We follow topics which provide a context for our learning. We also learn through child initiated activities that arise during independent learning time.

Curriculum

In Reception the children are provided with a stimulating learning environment which encourages learning through play - a fundamental part of early learning.

The school uses the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum to plan learning opportunities in the following areas:

Learning links are made across both EYFS and Y1 objectives and learning opportunities for Y1 are provided within group and whole-class teaching as well as within the learning environment. Along with EYFS, Y1 children are encouraged to explore and learn through carefully planned play-based learning opportunities.

Life in Chestnut Class

We are a class of imaginative, inquisitive and focused children who are always ready to learn. We love exploring and finding answers to questions ourselves.

All of our EYFS children have their birthdays in the Autumn term so we love this time of year!

We are very lucky to have a mixed class! As the Y1s in our class know the rules and routines of the school already they make fantastic role-models for the younger children. Our Y1s also have the added benefit of an indoor and outdoor learning environment which is set up to enable them to learn through play and investigation. They are brilliant at this type of learning. The variety of opportunities on offer in Chestnut Class help our Y1 children to adapt to the demands of different learning tasks, including more formal ones.
